Lighting your fire, the top-down lighting method
Steps to light your fire:
- Place the split logs at the bottom of the fireplace grate, spacing them to allow air to circulate
- Add small pieces of dry kindling wood according to the diagram opposite.
- Place a fire-lighter between the pieces of kindling on top and light it.
- Close the appliance door ensuring the air inlets are fully open. Some manufacturers recommend leaving the door slightly ajar. Check your manual for appliance-specific guidance.
The fire will catch and spread to the logs without further intervention. Watch the flame colour – it shows the quality of the fire.
Flame tending towards blue = fire successfully lit!

Choose an eco-friendly solution that causes less soot and dirt than newspaper.
