What size floor plate do you need for a stove?
The size of the floor plate is crucial for ensuring safety and protecting the floor in front of your wood-burning stove or pellet stove. It is essential to calculate these dimensions based on the fire’s characteristics, while also respecting the safety instructions specified in the installation guide provided by the manufacturer. A particularly important point is the loading area located at the front of the stove, where the door opens to add wood or pellets. This area must be protected to avoid risks caused by flying embers or sparks. As a general rule, the floor plate should protrude sufficiently at the front of the stove – often by at least 30cm – although exact distances may vary depending on your stove model and you should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
As for the shape of the floor plate you choose, it depends on the shape of your wood- burning stove or where it is positioned in the room. Some shapes are suitable for a stove installed in a corner, like our Water Drop model!

Why place a plate under a stove?
It protects the floor from potential risks caused by falling embers or sparks. Whether you have a wood floor, tiles, carpet or cellular concrete, the floor plate prevents permanent or dangerous damage. It also creates a visual line around the stove not to be crossed, defining a safe and stylish area.
By combining the floor plate with stove wall protection and skirting covers, you can improve safety from floor to ceiling while enhancing the overall aesthetic of your stove area.
For added safety, consider installing a stove guard to set clear safety distances – especially for children and pets (see our article on why to use stove protection).
The different floor-plate materials
Floor plates come in a range of materials, each with its own advantages. Steel floor plates are extremely robust and mean there is no weight limit on your fire. They are ideal for the heaviest stoves. On the other hand, the transparency of toughened glass floor plates discreetly sets off your flooring. Although they are equally functional, the stove’s weight is limited to 300kg to preserve the integrity of the glass.
